Single internal door with side screen

The McQuillan Project in Acklam focused on creating a clear visual separation between rooms while preserving light flow and maintaining a clean, architectural aesthetic. The homeowners wanted a refined internal feature that felt contemporary without overpowering the existing interior.

To meet this brief, we installed a single aluminium internal door with a fixed side screen, delivering both practicality and strong visual balance.

Design intent and layout

The combination of a single hinged door and side screen allowed us to achieve a wider glazed opening without using a double-door configuration. This approach keeps the everyday access simple while introducing a larger glazed presence that enhances the sense of space.

The side screen plays a key role in maintaining symmetry and proportion, ensuring the installation feels deliberate and well-integrated rather than like an afterthought.

Aluminium framing and sightlines

Slim aluminium profiles were selected to maximise glass area and create crisp, consistent sightlines across both the door and side screen. The framing delivers a steel-look appearance while benefiting from aluminium’s strength, stability, and precision.

Glazing bars were aligned across the full width of the installation, reinforcing the bespoke feel and providing visual continuity between the opening elements and the fixed panel.

Functionality and everyday use

The hinged door offers a familiar and practical solution for daily movement between spaces, while the fixed side screen allows natural light to travel freely through the home. This setup helps maintain separation between rooms without creating a closed or boxed-in feeling.

Acoustic separation is improved compared to open-plan layouts, making the space more versatile for work, relaxation, or entertaining.

Finish and detailing

The installation was finished in a classic black powder-coated aluminium, complementing the surrounding décor and adding a subtle architectural contrast. High-quality hardware was specified to match the frames, providing a solid feel and smooth operation.

All glazing was specified as toughened safety glass, ensuring durability, safety, and long-term performance.

The finished installation delivers a clean, elegant internal feature that enhances both the flow and function of the home. The single door with side screen creates a strong focal point while remaining understated and timeless.
