Single internal door with side screen and fan light, plus external doors and glazing
The Paul Project in North Shields was a carefully considered renovation that combined refined internal detailing with high-performance external glazing. The aim was to improve natural light throughout the property while introducing architectural features that felt cohesive across both internal and external spaces.
This project brought together two complementary elements: a bespoke aluminium internal door with side screen and fan light by Alu Elite, and a set of external French doors, skylight, and a single external door supplied and installed by our sister company, BM Bifolding Doors.
Internal design and configuration
Internally, the focus was on creating a strong visual connection between rooms while preserving separation and structure. We installed a single aluminium internal door, flanked by a fixed side screen and topped with a fan light, transforming what would traditionally be a closed-off opening into a bright architectural feature.
The addition of the fan light allowed daylight to flow deeper into the surrounding spaces, enhancing the sense of height and openness without increasing the footprint of the opening itself. Slim aluminium profiles were used throughout, delivering a clean, steel-look aesthetic while keeping the system visually light and well proportioned.
Consistent glazing bar alignment across the door, side screen, and fan light was essential to the overall finish, ensuring the installation felt intentional and balanced rather than segmented.
External glazing and daylight strategy
To complement the internal installation, BM Bifolding Doors supplied and installed a set of external French doors, a skylight, and a single external door, creating a unified approach to daylight and access across the property.
The external French doors provide a wide, elegant opening to the garden, improving indoor–outdoor flow and making the most of the available natural light. Above, the skylight introduces additional daylight from overhead, working in tandem with the internal fan light to brighten the heart of the home throughout the day.
The single external door offers a practical everyday access point, finished to match the wider glazing scheme and maintain visual consistency across elevations.
Materials and finishes
Both the internal and external elements were finished in complementary tones, ensuring a seamless transition between inside and out. High-quality aluminium frames were specified for their durability, low maintenance requirements, and long-term performance, while toughened safety glazing was used throughout to meet modern standards.
Attention to detail was key, from the alignment of frames and glazing bars to the positioning of handles and hardware, all contributing to a refined and cohesive result.
The result
The Paul Project delivers a well-balanced blend of form and function. Internally, the door, side screen, and fan light create a striking architectural feature that enhances light and flow between rooms. Externally, the French doors and skylight elevate the connection to the outdoors while improving the overall brightness of the home.
Together, the work by Alu Elite and BM Bifolding Doors demonstrates how thoughtful coordination between internal and external glazing can transform a property, adding both aesthetic value and everyday usability.
